Dear friend,
Welcome to the first addition of
the Solutions for Texas Legislative Update! This is the first step you can take to end the prison crisis, save taxpayers'
money, unite families and promote community safety. We hope this update is helpful throughout the legislative session in identifying
periods of action that are critical to ensuring the legislature introduces smart on crime
legislation. The session ends on May 30 and Governor Perry will decide which bills to veto by June 19. Until then, we will
keep you up to date on these issues.
What does it mean
to be smart on crime?

We Need Your Help - Taking action is just a phone call away! |

|
Call your representative and your senator. ( Who represents me?) Let them know that you are a voter in their district and urge your
representative to support smart and effective criminal justice solutions this session instead of new prison beds:
- Fund more alternatives to incarceration
- Fund more alternatives to incarceration
- Modernize penalty ranges to better utilize prison and jail

Featured Bills |
|
|
We hope to see several important bills filed in the coming days. At this time, the best bills are:
- HB575-Representative Haggerty of El Paso provides
an incentive to comply with probation and gives the probationer an opportunity to earn early discharge from probation.
- HB254-Representative Dutton of Houston
makes small-time marijuana users pay the system instead of making the system pay for them. HB254 alleviates the burden on
Texas' 254 county jails by making people pay a fine for possessing less than one ounce of marijuana & reserving jail space
for more serious offenders.
Contact your state representative and state senator regarding
these bills and urge them to support for these improvements. |
