Governor Perry announced this week that "There are better, more efficient ways to deal with this prison population than going and building more prisons."

Governor Perry said that new prisons are last on his list of justice priorities. The article appeared Thursday, February 10th in the Austin American Statesman.

This is evidence that our state leaders see that smart on crime intiatives are the most practical solutions for the prison crisis.

  • The Latest
  • This past week, the Texas Legislature focused on the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) $2.5 billion/year budget that covers probation, prison and parole. Since 90% of that budget must be spent on prison, because so many people are being sent to Texas prison for such a long time, very little is left to fund probation or parole programs that work.

This session, Texas legislators have already filed 60 bills that would increase jail or prison time for specific conduct. New bills that increase prison time are being filed almost daily. Find out which bills will undo the hard work that you are doing this session.
