An incredible number of Texans have traveled to the state capitol this session to ask for "smart on crime" initiatives.
In February, over a hundred bright young Texans gathered in Austin for the Texas LULAC Young Adult Conference to
learn about state government. The young adults combined with over a hundred others to meet with their legislators and ask
for change during the LULAC & NAACP Legislative Mobilization Day.
March brought a whirlwind of activity to the capitol with hundreds of people from the faith community gathering
on March 7 for Second Chance Day, which included a memorable prayer session in the rotunda in addition to valuable
meetings with legislators. In mid- March, Family Legislative Day was attended by hundreds of family members of incarcerated
people who visited with legislators to ask for effective alternatives to incarceration. Toward the end of March, Winner's
Circle Peer Support Network members gathered from all around the state at the capitol to lobby for a restoration of the
treatment initiative.
So many other concerned Texans have also visited the capitol this session to ask the Legislature to invest tax dollars
in more effective solutions than prison. We salute each and every hard-working Texan who has taken time off work to travel
to Austin to ensure that your voice is heard!
